From online oversharing to site overuse, social media is often considered “too much,” something that needs escaping from in order to get back to our true selves. In the Western world, wilderness has always been that somewhere to escape. But wilderness ideology has a problematic history of exclusion. Instagram is adding to the complexity of wilderness and diversifying who gets to experience and define wilderness. Through adding digital layers of representation and discourse, those traditionally erased or misrepresented are choosing how to represent themselves. This thesis, sited in an already viral landscape, imagines a place where technology and wilderness will coexist, where wilderness is not a place to escape the internet, and where relationships between the self and others are reconfigured. graduate project, spring 2019&nbsp; Daniel Roehr, Susan Herrington&nbsp; faculty advisor David Zielnicki in the news The Tyee Part 1: ResearchThe research portion of this graduate project set out to examine the popularity of outdoor recreation photos on Instagram. I wanted to know how Instagram was changing so-called wilderness landscapes and what could be done to manage the crowding and behavioural issues that can partially be attributed to some places going viral on Instagram. Two very different precedents were used to look at how some spaces were highly influenced by Instagram culture: pop-up Instagram experiences and Mather Point in the Grand Canyon, recently redesigned by DHM Design.&nbsp;My research then turned to look at the motivations for those who post their outdoor recreation photos on Instagram (more than a billion people overall use the platform regularly). After compiling, organizing, and overlaying Instagram photos that had been geotagged to the Stawamus Chief in Squamish, BC, I found that women had a much larger presence in this outdoor area on Instagram than their presence in the physical location. I theorized that women and other groups that have been long erased from wilderness recreation are using Instagram to assert their presence in wilderness areas, changing our conception of wilderness visited mountainous Northern region of Wells Gray Provincial Park, in Eastern BC. The park’s branding, calling itself “the Canada you imagined” taps into our conception of wilderness as a place untouched but open and ready to be explored or to be conquered. In this case, the “conquering” is done by recreating. The pit at the center of the journey has been known by humans since the Wells Gray area was a valued hunting ground for the Simpcw, Chilcotin, and Canim Lake First Nations. But the pit was recently “rediscovered” by biologists during a helicopter caribou survey last spring. This project imagines the journies that will be taken to this viral pit. Along the way, technology use is encouraged by "tech packs” which offer electricity, wifi, and lighting, but there will inevitably be periods of “disconnecting” as well. Throughout the journey, we continue to explore wilderness and self-representation. Do we have an obligation to share photos that are better represent our true experiences? What even is an authentic photo? This project is inspired by Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Theory. The cyborg is a theory appropriated from the military and it allows us to explore alternative ways of being human. Through the cyborg, we can explore more fluid identities and break down boundaries. The theory is playful in that it is an argument for taking pleasure in the blurring the boundaries. But is also responsible. employ a tactic that she calls “Productive Mimesis.” This is a form of resistance where women imperfectly imitate stereotypes about themselves in order to undermine the stereotypes. It is a playful imitation, a strategic performance, an imitation of an imitation. The goal is to reveal the artificial construction and performative character of the original photographs and begin to create a new social form. city block, our site was located at Main St. and 7th in Vancouver. We were asked to respond to the longstanding neighborhood character of Mount Pleasant as well as the coming changes, which include a social housing building slated for the block to the south, a modern complex of HootSuite buildings to the north, and a new row of residential buildings along Main St. Our proposal was to create a park that would welcome everyone, whether that be tech workers looking for a lunch spot, neighborhood kids playing basketball, or senior citizens looking to chat with their friends in a friendly environment. There was an obvious takeaway from this studio for me: I learned to take an initial design concept and apply it to everything from broad landform decisions to small design details. The following is our project statement that drove all of our design decisions: In the face of increasing pressures from external forces, Mount Pleasant is undergoing rapid change and risks losing the identity which has defined it for so long. The prospect proposed is that the best way to preserve this character is to put it on display for all to see, creating a flexible, vibrant, and celebratory public space that represents all of the neighborhood. Its character is not defined by the form or the material but by the diversity of life which animates it. the route of the Dakota Access Pipeline and reveal how its contentious existence has inflicted social and environmental grief. The project takes an activist role by singling out acts of dominance embedded in the pipeline’s controversial history. Through the theme of atonement, the project aims to first expose the pipeline’s invisible components, including oil industry malpractices, the resulting environmental degradation, infringement of land ownership and violation of water rights. The project reimagines a range of future possibilities incorporating the existing hidden practices and infrastructure. A physical threshold of a curtain physically manifests the border between ceded and unceded territory. In cases in which landowners did not agree to lease their, it was taken through eminent domain. Right to Roam is a path along the pipeline easement, a 100-foot-wide zone in which nothing can be built or grown beyond herbaceous plants. Here, walkers are encouraged to occupy the same space that oil companies were given to transport their product. Roaming along the path of the pipeline is both an act of recreation and activism. Before the rise of human settlement and the construction of linear infrastructure that fragment habitats, bison once roamed free in the Midwest - drinking, bathing, and rolling in naturally occurring shallow water holes known as wallows. Wallows eventually became larger impermeable basins, a trademark of the prairie landscape. This intervention proposes reflecting pools set into the ground corresponding to bison migration patterns. The brief was to create a modern-looking building that fit into the rustic nature of Gambier Island and streamlined the process of preparing for water activities. The shelter is constructed of fir, hemlock, and cedar and primarily constructed using bolted connections. I then used the “flyby” feature to find records of people that cross my journey in real time. I picked one person for each journey, marked the place where we had our “missed connection” and then tried to glean what I could about their lives from their internet presence, starting from their Strava profile and then jumping into other forms of social media and other websites. I wrote each person a missed connection, using popular phrases from Craigslist and dropping creepy hints about their personal lives. This project is about how even when we are exploring a place in the physical world, like when I am walking my dog, bike commuting or going for a run, a part of us always exists online, whether we are directly sharing our route via Strava or just have an online presence in the background of our minds. Michak https://torymichak.com/Info-1 I am a 2019 Master of&nbsp; Landscape Architecture with a background in graphic design. My interest in landscape architecture began as a way to merge my career in graphic design with my passion for cities, public space, and nature. As a designer, I want to create spaces that promote community well-being and contribute to a sense of belonging. I believe this can be as simple as providing a comfortable seat from which to people-watch or as complicated as devising a unique, adventurous place that evokes a sense of wonder and awe. As a graphic designer, I worked with Zipcar, Brooklyn Boulders, The Boston Preservation Alliance, Paradise Copies,&nbsp;GenArts, Lexmark, Tactivate, Serif Group, and Captain Jack’s Roadside Shack, among others.Originally from Northampton, Massachusetts, I moved to Vancouver to attend UBC in 2016. I have also studied or worked in New York City, Boston, the U.K., and Lexington, Kentucky. When I’m not working you’ll find me trail running in the North Shore mountains, rock climbing in Squamish, or wandering Vancouver’s neighborhoods, all with my trusty pup, Rupert.
